Why Is the Water Black? The Science Behind Guyana's Blackwater Creeks

Float along our zipline route and you'll pass over water that's dark, almost tea-colored, rather than the clear blue most people picture when they think "creek." It's not dirt, and it's not a problem — it's one of the most distinctive features of Guyana's natural landscape, and there's real science behind it.

It's Tea, Not Dirt

Blackwater gets its color the same way a cup of tea does: water passing over decaying leaves and plant matter slowly leaches out organic compounds called tannins and humic acids. Those compounds absorb most of the blue light passing through the water and let the red wavelengths through, which is what gives blackwater its deep, reddish-brown tint. It's a completely natural process, and it's common wherever water moves slowly through forest floor rich in leaf litter and sits on old, well-weathered soil.

The Guyana Shield

Guyana sits on top of one of the oldest and most heavily weathered pieces of the earth's crust in South America, known as the Guyana Shield. Soils this old have had millions of years to have their soluble minerals washed away, which is exactly the kind of geology that produces blackwater rivers and creeks. It's the same basic process behind the much larger Rio Negro in the Amazon basin — Guyana's creeks are a smaller, closer-to-home version of the same phenomenon.

What It's Like to Swim In It

Blackwater tends to be naturally soft and slightly acidic, and it's a completely normal, safe environment to swim and play in — it just looks different from the chlorinated blue you might be used to. Once you're used to it, there's something genuinely calming about it; the dark surface reflects the forest canopy above it almost like a mirror.
